Annual Summer Grazing Auction

Date: Thursday 28th March 2019 at 2:30pm

Location: The Black Swan, Horncastle

Viewing: At any reasonable time, with particulars

Each spring we hold an auction of land available to let for grazing during the season which normally starts immediately after the auction and ends on 31st October.

The sale begins traditionally with the 'candle and pin auction' of the grazing rights to village hall field at Old Bolingbroke. The seasons grass is sold to the highest bidder before the pin drops from a lighted candle, as decreed in the donors bequest. The proceeds go to village funds.

Most lots are let for grazing cattle only however some may allow sheep, others horses or mowing etc.

The 2019 catalogues, both for grazing by Auction and Private Treaty, are now available to download, opposite.  Further vendors wishing to let their land should contact George Harrison, Horncastle office: george@robert-bell.org

  • Conditions of Sale are set out within the catalogue and licence fees are due at the fall of the hammer or deferred until 1st August by agreement.

Prices at the 2018 auction averaged £92/ac (compared to £90/ac in 2017). We let over 1000 acres each year - albeit mostly by private treaty. Graziers and vendors interested in the letting of land by private treaty for the 2019 season should contact Horncastle office.

We have an experienced team dealing with the cataloguing, letting agreements, subsidy advice, licence fee demands and accounting, who will be pleased to help and advise on all aspects.
